Glassless Film Holders

Microtek scanners use a universal film holder drawer with various inserts to accommodate different film formats.  In all cases, except with the mounted slide holder, you can remove the top hold down frames and replace them with AN glass.  Your film goes in first, emulsion down, then the AN glass on top, etched side down.

Unless you have some unusually curled film there should be no need for a bottom sheet of glass in holders up to the 6x9cm format.  But we do offer it as an option.

In 4x5 holders we do recommend that you use two sheets of glass. The image area is so large that we can’t guaranty that the film will stay flat when using a single sheet of glass.

Below is a list of our part numbers for use in the Microtek glassless holders.

35mm Glassless carrier- This holder is designed to accommodate two strips of film so you’ll need to purchase two sheets of glass to fill the entire unit.

AN Glass- MIC35AN2
Clear Glass-MIC35CLR2

6x7cm Glassless Holder- This holder is designed to accommodate four frames of film so you’ll need to purchase four sheets of glass to fill the entire unit. Also, if you are scanning 6x6cm film you may find it necessary to use a bottom piece of clear glass to ensure film flatness.

Microtek 8x10” Glass Film Holder

Microtek offers as an option an 8x10” glass film holder.  The holder is supplied with a single sheet of clear glass mounted.  They supply no hold down system or top glass for this holder.

We’ve had great success using our AN glass as a top sheet in these holders.  Film is placed emulsion down in the holder, then AN glass on top, etched side down.

We like this system so much that we’ve put aside the glassless holders.  We use the glass holder for all formats of film.  To eliminate stray light we purchased some opaque black acetate and cut openings for different film formats.  It’s an effective method of keeping film flat and more convenient than using the traditional glassless holders. You can also scan full rolls of film to create a tradition contact sheet.

Microtek/Polaroid Medium Format Film Scanner.

Artixscan

This film scanner was originally made by Polaroid.  Microtek purchased the product line in the early part of this century.  Focal Point began making glass and performing the assembly work for Polaroid in the late 1990s’ and continued after the ownership change.

Our only experience with this scanner is with the medium format glass holder. There has never been a call for modifying the glassless carriers for use with glass.

We offer four options to Artixscan/Polaroid users.

1.     We can supply you with an OEM version of the holder.  This is exactly what we used to sell to Microtek, including the 120film and 35mm film masks.    Our part number for this item is AS120TF.

2.     We have a modified version of the original holder.  Through the years of supplying these holders we’ve noticed some changes that we would have made if this was our product.  The glass mounting system in particular.  In the original version glass is held in place with double sided tape. This requires that the user clean the glass in the holder, making it difficult to clean into corners and hard to remove any over spray from your glass cleaner.

Our solution is to eliminate the top half of the holder completely, use thicker, heavier glass, and size it larger to fit snuggly into the base. This allows the user to remove glass for cleaning and eliminates over spray problems.  We feel that it’s a much more user friendly option.  Our part number for this item is AS120TFMOD

3.     We can supply you with OEM replacement glass for this holder.  Our part numbers for this are TF120AN (AN glass) & TF120CLR (Clear).  Both parts come with mounting tape.

4.     We can supply you with our modified size glass with instructions on how to convert your existing holder.  Our part numbers for these items are TF120ANMOD (AN) & TF120CLRMOD (Clear)
